What is the Rainy Season in China?

Rainy Season in China

Published: 2026-06-07 07:48

China does not have a single, nationwide rainy season. Because the country is so vast, the timing and intensity of rainfall vary significantly by region.

The primary rainy season is driven by the summer monsoons, which bring warm, moist air from the seas to eastern and southern China between April and September. However, the specific months for peak rainfall differ across the country.

Here is a regional breakdown of the rainy seasons to help you plan your trip:

1. South China (e.g., Guilin, Guangzhou, Hong Kong)
Rainy Season is from April to June (main rainy season) and August to September (typhoon season).  A long rainy season with two peaks. April to June brings the Dragon Boat Rain, characterized by persistent, heavy downpours. Later in the summer, typhoons can bring intense, short-lived storms.

2. East China (e.g., Shanghai, Hangzhou, Huangshan)
Rainy Season is from June to July. This is the famous Plum Rain Season (Meiyu). Expect several weeks of humid, overcast weather with continuous light to moderate rain. |

3. North China (e.g., Beijing, Xi'an)
Rainy Season is from July to August. A short but intense rainy season. Most of the region's annual rainfall occurs during these two months, often in the form of sudden, heavy thunderstorms.

4. Western China (e.g., Chengdu, Zhangjiajie, Jiuzhaigou)
Rainy Season is from September to early October.  The main rainy season is in the summer, but this region is also known for its Autumn Rains - persistent, drizzly conditions that can last for weeks. |
