Shoton Festival, also called Sho Dun Festival, Yogurt Festival, Tibetan Opera Festival, Buddha Exhibition Festival is  one of the most grand and traditional celebration in Tibetan culture and features giant thangka unveilings, Tibetan opera performances, and traditional yogurt feasts. It falls on the beginning of the seventh lunar month every year.

Literally meaning Yogurt Festival, it originated from the ancient tradition that monks finished summer retreats, and local people offered homemade yogurt to them. During the festival, major monasteries hold the grand Buddha-unfolding ceremony. Pilgrims and tourists gather to admire giant Buddha thangkas, pray for blessings and taste authentic Tibetan yogurt.

Vibrant Tibetan opera performances, horse racing, wrestling and folk dances are also held everywhere. Full of strong ethnic customs and religious solemnity, the Shoton Festival perfectly inherits Tibetan traditional culture and reflects the local people's pious faith and joyful life.
