The Summer Palace Yiheyuan in Beijing

Summer Palace

The Summer Palace is the largest and most well-preserved imperial garden in China. Located in the northwestern suburbs of Beijing, it was originally a royal retreat for Qing Dynasty emperors and empresses seeking respite from the summer heat of the Forbidden City. Known as the "Museum of Royal Gardens," it is a masterpiece of Chinese landscape garden design.

Key Highlights
UNESCO World Heritage Site: Designated in 1998, it is celebrated for its harmonious blend of natural landscape and artificial features like pavilions, temples, and bridges.

Vast Landscape: Covering an area of 2.9 square kilometers (290 hectares), the garden is dominated by Kunming Lake (which takes up three-quarters of the area) and Longevity Hill.

Historical Significance: First built in 1750 as the "Garden of Clear Ripples," it was destroyed during the Second Opium War (1860) and rebuilt in 1886 by Empress Dowager Cixi, who renamed it the "Summer Palace." It served as her primary residence during the later part of her rule.

Artistic Integration: The design draws inspiration from the famous West Lake in Hangzhou and incorporates architectural styles from various regions of China, including water towns in Jiangnan (south of the Yangtze River) and Tibetan Buddhist temples.

Must-See Attractions
The Long Corridor: A 728-meter covered walkway that snakes along the northern shore of Kunming Lake. It is famous for its 14,000+ paintings on the beams, depicting scenes from Chinese history, folklore, and landscapes.

The Tower of Buddhist Incense: The architectural centerpiece of the garden, located on the hillside. This octagonal pavilion offers a commanding view of the lake and the surrounding area.

The Marble Boat: Located at the western end of the Long Corridor, this elegant Western-style boat made of marble and wood was a favorite spot for Empress Dowager Cixi to entertain guests.

Kunming Lake & The Seventeen-Arch Bridge: The lake is perfect for boating, while the bridge connects the eastern dike to Nanhu Island (South Lake Island), featuring 17 graceful arches.

Suzhou Street: A recreation of a water town in southern China, located in the back of the garden along the river. Emperors and concubines would once "shop" here for fun; today, it is filled with souvenir shops.
