Located on the eastern foothills of Helan Mountain in Ningxia, Helan Mountain Rock Paintings(Helan Shan Rock Carvings) are a magnificent prehistoric art gallery, hailed as an "unwritten stone history book". Dating back 3,000 to 10,000 years, they were created by ancient nomadic tribes like the Xiongnu and Xianbei.

As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it's known for its ancient petroglyphs depicting animals, human figures, and hunting scenes. With over 20,000 panels discovered across 27 sites, the paintings feature human faces, animals, hunting/herding scenes, and ritual symbols. The Helankou site, the core area, preserves nearly 6,000 paintings, including the iconic "Sun God" design. These carvings, made by chiseling and grinding, vividly record ancient life, beliefs, and primitive art.
