The Mutianyu Great Wall is widely regarded as the finest and most representative section of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall. Located in Huairou District, approximately 70 kilometers northeast of Beijing, it connects the Juyongguan Pass in the west and the Gubeikou section in the east.
Unlike the crowded Badaling section, Mutianyu offers a more peaceful hiking experience while boasting unique architectural features and breathtaking scenery. It is often described as the "Jewel of the Great Wall."

Key Highlights
Unique "Double-Sided Battlements": Unlike most other sections where battlements (defensive walls with openings) are only built on the outer side, Mutianyu features battlements on both the inner and outer sides. This rare design indicates that enemies could approach from both directions, highlighting its strategic military importance in ancient times.

"Three-For-One" Watchtower: At the Zhengguan Pass (Main Pass), three watchtowers stand closely together, guarding the pass with overlapping fields of fire. This is a unique structure not found elsewhere on the Great Wall.

Coexistence of Inner and Outer "Branch Cities": Mutianyu features both inner and outer auxiliary walls (branch cities) that branch out from the main wall according to the mountain terrain, creating a complex and formidable defense system.

Breathtaking Scenery: Over 96% of the area is covered in vegetation. The wall winds through lush mountains, offering stunning views in every season—blooming flowers in spring, green waves in summer, colorful foliage in autumn, and a silver-white wonderland in winter.

Watchtower 20 - "Ox Horn Edge" (Niu Jiao Bian): The wall climbs steeply up a 1-kilometer-high cliff, resembling a bull's horn. It is a challenging but rewarding climb.
Watchtower 14 - "Eagle Flying Upside Down" (Ying Fei Dao Yang): This section features a nearly vertical drop with a height difference of 10 meters. The steepness is so legendary that it is said even an eagle would have to fly upside down to pass through.
Cable Car & Toboggan: The景区 (scenic area) offers a fully enclosed cable car to lift visitors up to the 6th or 14th watchtower, making it accessible for families and the elderly. For the adventurous, a 1,580-meter alpine slide (toboggan) allows you to slide down the mountain like "flying close to the ground."

Self-Drive: Take the Beijing-Chengde Expressway and exit at Exit 13 (Beitai Road Exit).

Best Time for Foliage: If you visit in October, you will catch the peak of the red leaves (usually mid-Oct to early Nov).
