Located in Tianshui, Gansu, the Maijishan (Wheat Stack Mountain) Grottoes are one of China's Four Great Grottoes and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Carved into a striking reddish sandstone cliff, they date back to the Later Qin Dynasty (384–417 AD) and were continuously expanded over 1,600 years through the Northern Wei to Qing dynasties.

Today the site holds 221 caves, over 10,000 clay and stone statues, and around 1,000 m² of murals. Famous as the "Oriental Sculpture Art Gallery," Maijishan excels in lifelike clay sculptures—gentle-faced Buddhas, graceful bodhisattvas, and vivid guardian figures—that blend sacred serenity with human warmth. Its dramatic hanging walkways clinging to sheer cliffs add to the breathtaking spectacle. A treasure trove of Buddhist art on the ancient Silk Road, the grottoes preserve the evolution of Chinese sculpture and mirror the cultural integration of medieval China.
