The Guozijian Imperial Academy was the highest educational administration institution and national university in China during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. Historical Significance & Architecture
History: Originally built in 1302 during the Yuan Dynasty, it served as the royal academy for over 600 years. During the Ming Dynasty, a "dual capital" system was in place, so there were two academies: the one in Beijing was called the "Northern Academy" (北监), and the one in Nanjing was the "Southern Academy."
Layout: It is a magnificent complex of traditional Chinese architecture, arranged symmetrically along a central axis. The main structures include the Jixian Gate (main gate), Taixue Gate (second gate), the iconic Glazed Porcelain Archway, the Biyong Hall, the Yilun Hall, and the Jingyi Pavilion.
Biyong Hall: This is the centerpiece of the academy. It is the only surviving ancient "classroom" in China where emperors delivered lectures. The hall is surrounded by a circular water pool, symbolizing the imperial education system and the flow of knowledge.
