Chaotianmen Square lies at the eastern tip of Yuzhong Peninsula, where the Yangtze River and Jialing River converge. It is a landmark symbol of Chongqing with a long history. In ancient times, it was an important official dock where imperial envoys and officials arrived, hence the name Chaotianmen, meaning "Gate Facing the Imperial Court".
